It is bittersweet that we must postpone our show this Friday at Rocketown. When we initially booked the date, it was with the full belief that our record would have already been out. Now that the release has been moved, we want to postpone the show this Friday until July 2nd and make it a TRUE album release show. Everyone attending the show on July 2nd will receive an autographed copy of our new record. In addition, tickets for the initial show will be good for the new show, including the new record. We sincerely apologize for the change and thank you for your support.

So it is official, Collapsible Lung will be coming out July 2nd.

It saddens me, more than you know, to tell you that I have left Relient K. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the last 5 years. You all made me feel like I was in the band longer than I was. Thank you all for taking the time and spending the money to come to the shows, allowing me to have a job in music. Thank you for spending time with me after shows, having good conversation or just saying hello. I am beyond grateful. I love being on tour so much and I can’t wait to play for you all again. I’m currently out with Cold War Kids, guitar teching. Come on out to a show and say hello! Trust me when I say, I wish this would have turned out differently. I tried my very best to not have things get to this point.

So I know that many Relient K fans are freaking out right now so I thought that I would share my view of this situation. I do not think Relient K is breaking up. It still is a possibility but the way that the announcement is worded makes it seem like that is not the case. Especially since the…

The new album has been finished for a while, in Australia Matt said it’ll be out “in a couple of weeks” which may not be literal but does mean it’s coming out soon (hopefully). He also said “April or May” for the album release in January, so it is my strong belief that unless something goes horribly wrong, this tour IS meant to promote the new album which will hopefully be out either before or during it.

Having said that if the album release really is imminent, I am concerned because we haven’t had any official word on it. The guys are not doing interviews to promote it, we haven’t had any pre-release buzz, no tracklist, no cover, no nothing. If it wasn’t for the videos from Easterfest we probably wouldn’t know the album name either.

Which leads me to fear that Ethan, Jon and John ARE considering leaving the band, which leaves the band in confusion and in need to straighten things out before gearing up to release a new album. All of this worries me a great deal, particularly because three different members of the band are skipping a tour without explanation.

I mean, if family is an explanation, why is Hoopes going on tour? Much like Schneck, Hoopes has two children. Hoopes has skipped RK shows in the past to be with his family, so why is he going this time? And why is Ethan going on tour with another band, but can’t go on tour with Relient K? This is all very strange.

I’m wondering why the band even committed to this tour if 3/5th of it are backing out. What’s the point of even going on this tour if 3/5th of it can’t go?

I’m not saying Ethan, Jon and John can’t have their reasons to back out of a tour and not go. It’s their life and their decision. But I wish they would be open with us and just tell us what’s going on. If they want to leave, it’s their right, but at least don’t leave us in the dark. And if they don’t want to leave, why not be more honest about what’s going on rather than leave us guessing and assuming the worst?

One last thing: ZAC FARRO YOU ARE NOT WELCOMED HERE. GO AWAY. Any person who leaves a successful band he helped build from the ground up just because his brother decides to leave said band is not someone I trust. And therefore don’t want him in one of my favorite bands.

Yeah I agree that not hearing much about this new album is very strange and weird. I am hoping that it doesn’t mean anything bad.

I am not too concerned about Jon and John leaving the tour because they do have family and might not want to leave them right now. And I don’t think them wanting to stay would mean that Matt Hoopes wouldn’t want to go on tour this time even though he also has family. However I completely agree with you about Ethan. I don’t understand why he would be touring with another band and then leave his own tour.

Just to clarify a few things about Relient K. (From our previous post)

1. We will be doing the upcoming tour as a full band, and we are very excited about it! Dan Gartley and Tom Breyfogle will be performing on bass and drums respectively. They are both amazing friends (from Canton, OH), and incredibly talented musicians.

2. We are all still friends, and only want the best for each other.

3. Our new album “Collapsible Lung” is finished and will be coming out soon. It was made by all five of us. We apologize for the delays thus far. We are so excited about it and can’t wait for you to hear it!

When Matt and I started this band in high school, we could have never imagined where it was headed, and it has continued to be a blessing and an amazing experience throughout the years. Thank you for sticking with us, hanging out with us, singing with us, and being a part of our lives.

Life happens. It is difficult to balance families, financial responsibilities, relationships, and the rest of life. Time won’t slow down, and we are all on a journey, becoming the people we are going to be, and figuring out how to live.

The Jo(h)ns and Ethan are not able to do this upcoming tour. We hope to continue to make records and play shows together in the future.

We do plan to continue to play shows and make records. We would only ask at this point for your continued support. These types of things can tend to seem more dramatic than they actually are, and we urge you to not spread speculation about what may be going on. We would ask that you would support us and hope for the best for us individually and collectively.

Especially since the band has just finished working on the new record which is reported to be coming out sometime this year.

However, it is very strange that the band would agree to the tour and then 3 members would back out. This could be easily explainable though. John, Jon, Matt H, Matt T, and Ethan have all been moving on to different projects and interests lately and the band has not seemed to be the first priority anymore. I could be wrong about that but it is just been the vibe I have been getting. If that is the case, Jon, John, and Ethan might not have wanted to tour right now. Another possibility is that Relient K might be going on 2 major tours this year, this current one and the one for their new album (if it is coming out this year as has been speculated). If that is the case, Jon, John, and Ethan might not have been willing to tour around for most of the year leaving their families and such behind. If so, they may have felt that touring for the new album was more important.

I am definitely hoping I am right because I don’t know if I can deal with Relient K breaking up. What do you guys think?

It is with sadness that we write you to say that we will not be touring with Relient K on the upcoming tour dates. This will be the first tour that the Jo(h)n’s have missed in over eight years, and the first that Ethan has missed since he joined the band in 2008.
